UBC Millwrights Training for Underground Mining
UBC Millwright Local 1151 Thunder Bay, along with the Millwright Regional Council (MRC), is committed to preparing its members for work in underground mines. As the industry evolves, there is a growing need for specialized skills and training to ensure safety and efficiency in these challenging environments. Christian Pepin, the business representative for Local 1151, has been instrumental in spearheading these training initiatives.
The training initiatives are not just about immediate needs but also about long-term planning. Pepin highlights the importance of having a multi-year plan for the mining industry. This forward-thinking approach includes recognizing and addressing labour demands and training needs such as underground training, respiratory fit test training and confined space training. “We want to ensure all our members are work-ready and prepared for any challenges,” said Pepin “We are approaching training in new ways, utilizing opportunities in many locations and looking at all training avenues to get our members underground.”
One of the key components of this initiative is the NORCAT training, which members will receive in Sudbury. This training is essential for millwrights to gain the necessary skills and certifications required for underground work providing our industry partners access to fully trained and qualified millwrights for all projects that require underground work.
The significance of this project extends beyond Local 1151. It has benefits across the entire Millwright Regional Council, contributing to the overall preparedness and qualifications of its members, underground mining is an important part of the future for Thunder Bay and many other jurisdictions in Canada.
