The Millwright Regional Council (MRC) and UBC Millwright Local 1460 Alberta stand at the forefront of fostering nationwide collaboration and nurturing long-term industry partnerships. William McLeod, the Business Manager for Local 1460, elaborates on their journey and the initiatives that distinguish their approach.

William McLeod’s tenure as a Business Manager has been marked by a commitment to transparency and modernization. McLeod emphasizes the challenge of shifting entrenched mindsets and he sees transparency as a critical element in building trust and steering the union towards new avenues. “The Millwright Regional Council aligns with my vision, particularly regarding transparency,” said McLeod, highlighting the importance of an open and honest leadership approach.

One of the defining features of the MRC is its extensive nationwide network. McLeod points out, “We operate as separate locals, but we’re all in it together.” This collaborative framework allows the Locals to share experiences, learn from each other, and implement best practices without reinventing the wheel. The interconnectedness across provinces enhances efficiency and effectiveness, offering a robust support system for millwrights and industry partners across Canada.

The MRC’s approach to industry partnerships is transformative. Unlike traditional contractor-client relationships, the MRC fosters genuine partnerships with industry stakeholders. McLeod explains, “It’s a relationship from the ground up. We extend the extra mile, adapt curriculum to meet specific needs, and facilitate networking.” This approach helps industry partners, whether local or from other provinces, to expand their reach and capabilities seamlessly.

Supporting the professional development of its members is also a priority for the MRC. McLeod mentions increased access to leadership courses and a standardized message across the council. This cohesive approach ensures that members understand the value of the union and the opportunities available to them. Transparency remains a cornerstone, with a focus on member engagement and involvement in union activities.

Hand and hand with partnership and professional development, the MRC and Local 1460 are keen on embracing new technologies and innovations. McLeod highlights the excitement around carbon capture projects and the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) and micro modular reactors (MMRs). The MRC is proactive in preparing training programs and adapting to these advancements. “Being part of an institution that helps innovative technology work from the ground up is very exciting,” McLeod shares.

The Millwright Regional Council and Local 1460 in Alberta exemplify a forward-thinking, collaborative, and transparent approach. Through strategic partnerships, professional development, innovative training, they are not only enhancing the millwright profession but also contributing to the broader industry’s growth and evolution.
