Inside a Power-Generation Outage

In generating stations across the country, Millwrights work day and night on critical work that keeps the power on.

During a hot gas path inspection in Alberta, crews assess how turbine components are holding up under intense heat and what needs attention before another run.

In a shaft-alignment task, a reading outside specification starts an investigation. The shafts may need repositioning, or the cause may lie in a defective bearing or strain from connected piping. That finding determines whether the work calls for adjustment, repair or replacement. After the correction, the Millwright checks the alignment against the requirements and records the result.

Across shifts, those records help the next crew follow what was found, corrected and checked.

During a 2017 outage at Naturgy’s San Roque plant, limited access to acceptance criteria, expected dimensions and repair methods hindered completion. EPRI’s account describes how later guidance put those details into inspection data sheets, paired with verification points.

UBC’s gas and steam turbine qualification workshops require prior turbine familiarization, rigging and bolting qualifications, and Millwright safety training. The steam workshop combines classroom instruction with hands-on exercises to evaluate proficiency.

For owners and contractors, outage readiness means matching the crew’s experience and qualifications to the equipment and scope, with clear requirements for accepting the work. Explore UBC Millwrights in power generation and the training and workforce planning that support their work.
