AtkinsRéalis and the UBC Millwrights: Powering the Future of Nuclear Energy in Canada

Toronto, ON — As Canada prepares for a historic leap forward in nuclear energy, a powerful partnership between AtkinsRéalis and the Millwright Regional Council (MRC) is set to ensure skilled union labour plays a central role in building the country’s energy future.

With the Ontario government announcing its intention to build new nuclear reactors on Canadian soil for the first time in a generation, AtkinsRéalis—the steward of the CANDU reactor technology—is pledging its commitment to grow the sector responsibly and with Canadian workers at the heart of it.

“The Government of Ontario has announced its intention to build new nuclear reactors on Canadian soil for the first time in a generation. As its proud steward, AtkinsRéalis is striving to ensure CANDU reactors become the technology of choice to fuel the province’s nuclear ambitions,” said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis. “Should this be the case, I pledge to continue working with the UBC Millwrights to expand Canada’s nuclear capacity in a way that benefits workers.”

This renewed focus on nuclear energy comes at a time when Canada is seeking clean, reliable power sources to meet growing demand and carbon-reduction targets. As trusted experts in precision installation, maintenance, reactor, and turbine work, the MRC and the UBC Millwrights are uniquely positioned to deliver the skilled, safety-focused labour required for this ambitious expansion.

For the Millwright Regional Council, this partnership is more than a business relationship—it’s a commitment to ensuring that Canada’s energy transition creates real, lasting opportunities for unionized millwrights across the country.

“Our members have been on the front lines of Canada’s energy evolution for decades,” said Mark Beardsworth, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the MRC. “AtkinsRéalis recognizes the value our highly trained millwrights bring to nuclear projects—not just in technical ability, but in their dedication to safety and quality. This partnership means more work hours, more apprenticeships, and more long-term opportunities for our members to build careers while helping power Canada’s future.”

Together, AtkinsRéalis and the MRC are creating a blueprint for responsible energy development that puts skilled trades at the core of progress. As Canada embraces nuclear once again, the message is clear: the road to a cleaner future will be built by UBC Millwrights.
