Recognizing Brother Brad Sutton’s Retirement

Published On: January 22, 2026Categories: Press Release

After more than three decades of commitment to UBC Millwright Local 1916 Hamilton, the Millwright Regional Council proudly recognizes Brother Brad Sutton on his retirement and thanks him for a career defined by service and a clear focus on protecting millwright work.

Brad was initiated into the Brotherhood in 1992, earning his Journeyman status in 1996. From the outset, he approached his career with dedication and a strong work ethic. His leadership journey began early – Brad joined the Local 1916 Executive in 2002 and he took on the role of Business Agent representing members and supporting the operations of the Local. His leadership culminated in his appointment as Business Manager in 2022.

Beyond the Local, Brad’s influence extended across the broader labour movement. He served as President of the Hamilton Building Trades Council and Vice President of the Kitchener Building Trades, ensuring Millwrights had a voice at the table. His dedication is also reflected in his actions  – Brad has participated in every Labour Day parade since 1999.

Union values run deep in Brad’s family. His father-in-law, Marc Truchon, has been a member since 1959 and is recognized as the oldest living member of Local 1916 – a remarkable legacy that Brad carried forward with pride.

“Brad Sutton’s leadership has always embodied what it means to be a union millwright: integrity, tireless advocacy for our members, and a commitment to quality and jurisdiction. Brad has never shied away from difficult conversations or tough decisions, always putting the interests of the Local and the UBC first. His legacy is measured not only in the work he’s protected, but in the respect and unity he has fostered across the building trades. On behalf of the Millwright Regional Council and all those who have worked alongside him, I thank Brad for his decades of principled service and leadership that will inspire generations to come.”
—Mark Beardsworth, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Millwright Regional Council

Throughout his career, Brad remained focused on what mattered most: protecting Millwright jurisdiction and maintaining the quality of work. His advice to members was simple, direct, and grounded in accountability – “Every day is a workday.”

Reflecting on changes in the industry, Brad has pointed to an important shift – governments, colleges, and the public now have a clearer understanding of what a Millwright is, recognition earned through decades of consistent professionalism and expertise by members across the country.

On behalf of the Millwright Regional Council, our Locals, and the membership across Canada, thank you Brother Brad Sutton for your years of service and we wish you continued success and good health.
