Kingston, ON, August 19, 2023 — As a vital part of the Kingston area, UBC Millwright Local 1410 has embarked on exciting ventures that bolster the region's economic growth. UBC Millwright Local 1410 Kingston is actively recruiting and training the best qualified Millwrights and are proud of the involvement with the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) expansive water turbine refurbishment initiatives across Eastern Ontario. Alongside the anticipation of further projects in the Ottawa Valley region, Local 1410 holds a vital role in the additional water turbine installations and underlines their dedication to evolving infrastructure and clean power.

The unveiling of the world's first Micro Modular Reactor, set to be constructed at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories site in Chalk River, Ontario, also presents a groundbreaking opportunity for the skilled workforce and the region at large. This pioneering technology promises to usher in a new era of work, reaffirming the need for a highly skilled millwright workforce.

“UBC Millwright Local 1410 brings together vast industry knowledge with sophisticated processes to support our Members and Industry Partners to excel while solving challenges. Through a unified purpose and culture, Local 1410 delivers consistent performance that drives business forward while recruiting the best and brightest in the business.” said Mark Beardsworth, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Millwright Regional Council

Umicore's commencement of ground-clearing activities for the electric battery plant in Loyalist Township is another indication of the thriving region. With a projected timeline for the mechanical scope and the support of partners, UBC Millwright Local 1410 eagerly anticipates contributing to this venture. Collaboration with the Quinte Building Trades Council underscores the commitment to cohesive and successful project completion for our contractor partners.

To inspire the next generation, UBC Millwright Local 1410 recently hosted Trades Teachers from the Algonquin District School board. This initiative aimed to provide educators with insights into the lucrative and fulfilling careers available within the trades. A comprehensive tour of the Kingston training centre and engaging discussions highlighted the invaluable opportunities that the millwright profession offers to aspiring young adults.

To further show their dedication to training, Local 1410 is proud to introduce Mathew Kirkpatrick and Michael Macdonald as the training staff and future of the program. The expertise in the skilled trades and enthusiasm for training the next generation of millwrights that these members bring to the table will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Local 1410.

“The flourishing work landscape, coupled with partnerships such as that with OPG and our local Indigenous Communities through the ION program, continues to drive our growth and community impact,” stated Scott Thompson, Business Representative of Local 1410. “We are also expanding our Sisters in the Brotherhood initiative at UBC Millwright Local 1410, with three new members joining our ranks in the past four months. Our ability to evolve and meet the evolving demands of our dynamic work environment is a testament to our membership.”

Millwrights Local 1410 Kingston remains dedicated to excellence, collaboration, and community engagement and they look forward to working with partner contractors and owners continuing to make positive contributions to Kingston and across Canada in the industrial maintenance and construction fields.
